“For What Nate Did”

Back in 1999-2000, a short story I wrote entitled “For What Nate Did” won honorable mention in the Tallahassee Writer’s Association‘s Seven Hills fiction contest. After publication in the Seven Hills Fiction Review, the members of my writing group at the time encouraged me to take the story further. They insisted that there was much more to be told and after spending some time with my characters, I discovered they were oh, so right. Over the years (yes, years) that I have been working on the novel, I have changed many things from the original story, chief among them, character names, a finer definition of time and place, and the identity of the antagonist. More importantly, I am a much better writer now than I was a decade ago. But if you would like to read the story that inspired my novel Dancing at The Orange Peel, please click here. I warn you, the subject matter is not pretty.
